PERTH, Jul 21 (NNN-AAP) – In wake of a tragic shooting in Auckland, New Zealand, earlier yesterday, FIFA expressed profound grief for the victims.
“FIFA extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, who lost their lives following the incident, which occurred this (yesterday) morning in Auckland, New Zealand, and our thoughts and prayers remain with those who have been injured in this tragic incident,” stated the global football governing body.
Three individuals, the gunman included, are deceased and six others were injured in what Prime Minister Chris Hipkins described as a “serious” firearm incident in Auckland.
Before the kickoff of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup opening match between New Zealand and Norway, at Eden Park in Auckland, a moment of silence was observed.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, FIFA President, Gianni Infantino and Secretary General, Fatma Samoura were in contact with New Zealand authorities. The organisation has also maintained constant communication with the participating teams affected by the tragic event.
“FIFA has been informed that this was an isolated incident that was not related to football operations,” the statement read.
The global football authority also stated that, the FIFA Fan Festival’s operating hours in Auckland’s city centre would be confirmed in due course.– NNN-AAP
