JAKARTA, Jul 19 (NNN-ANTARA) – A lowland anoa calf has been born at a breeding facility in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi, the local conservation centre said, yesterday.
The birth of the anoa calf, to parents Anara and Rocky on Jul 9, has given environmentalists more hope for conserving endangered animal species, according to the head of the North Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Centre, Askhari Masikki.
“This anoa calf has begun nursing and can walk normally. Both he and his mother are healthy,” said Masikki.
This 6-kg calf has raised the number of births at the Anoa Breeding Centre to five. Among the other four, Raden was born in 2023, Deandra born in 2018, and Anara and Maesa in 2017.
The centre presently has a total of 10 anoas, including five females, since its founding eight years ago.
There are now fewer than 2,500 of these cow-like beasts in the world, after a 20-percent fall in population over the last two decades.– NNN-ANTARA
