MANILA, Jul 14 (NNN-PNA) – The Philippine government urged the people to store rainwater, to mitigate the impact of the El Nino phenomenon on agriculture production, the Presidential Communications Office said yesterday.
With the latest advisory on the presence of El Nino in the Tropical Pacific, weather experts warn of unusual warming of sea surface temperatures, which may lead to below-normal rainfall, causing dry spells and droughts in some regions in the Philippines.
The agriculture authorities encouraged food producers to stock rainwater for future use, as one of the water management strategies, amid the potential dry spell season.
The country has an average rainfall volume of over 2,300 millimetres per year.
The government is implementing other water management measures, including improving irrigation canals and other small-scale irrigation projects, and replacing unserviceable pump and engine sets, among others.
The government “has been doing early on to prevent production losses” due to El Nino.– NNN-PNA
