LIMA, July 14 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian Interior Minister Vicente Romero has ruled out the possibility of a “Toma de Lima” (Takeover of Lima), referring to the announcement of social demonstrations scheduled for July 19 in the capital city.
“I reaffirm that, in effect, there has never been a ‘Takeover of Lima,’ nor there will be one. That is not true, there has never been one,” he claimed.
In this regard, the minister assured that his sector is well-prepared for what may come, adding that the actions taken are aimed at providing safety for all Peruvians and visitors who decide to come to Peru during Independence Day holidays.
“Let us not forget the past. We have suffered a great deal. This country needs to run its course in a collective and joint manner, taking into account the development and well-being of all Peruvians,” he said.
The government official delivered these remarks as he was joined by Ministers Juan Carlos Mathews (Foreign Trade and Tourism), Raul Perez Reyes (Production), and Fernando Varela (Labor and Employment Promotion).
His comments came after a meeting they held with representatives of the country’s small and large-sized enterprises to address the announcement of social demonstrations scheduled for July 19.
Romero called on demonstrators to respect the rights of others, the free movement of citizens, and those who want to work.
“The Peruvian National Police (PNP) will be onsite 24 hours a day, always safeguarding the integrity and life of all people, including protesters and those who want to work,” he affirmed. — NNN-ANDINA
