India, Britain make progress in free trade talks

NEW DELHI, July 13 (NNN-Bernama) — India and Britain have made progress on crucial issues in their negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA).

Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held talks with British Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch during a visit to London on July 10 to 12.

“The ministers identified and focused on low-hanging fruits, which included the closure of several chapters in the negotiations. This pragmatic approach aimed at resolving issues where negotiators had encountered challenges,” India’s Commerce Ministry said on Wednesday.

“The visit proved to be critical in overcoming crucial obstacles and charting a path forward towards an ambitious and mutually beneficial trade deal,” it said.

Goyal also had a meeting with Douglas McNeill, the chief economic advisor to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The 11th round of FTA negotiations between the two countries will end on Friday.
