LIMA, July 11 (NNN-ANDINA) — The population in Peru has hit 33.726 million people, just 39 years after it reached 200 million, and it is projected that the total number of inhabitants will reach 39.363 in the next 27 years, that is, by 2050, according to theNational Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) estimates.
The data was released on the occasion of the World Population Day, which is observed every year on July 11, through the report titled “State of Peruvian Population 2023: A Look at Youth.”
According to INEI’s estimates and projections, 82.6% of the population resides in urban areas (27.848 million people).
Likewise, the Peruvian population is made up of 16.727 million men (49.6%) and 16.999 million women (50.4%).
On the other hand, 59.0% of the population lives on the coast (19.194 million), while 26.8% (9.027 million) of inhabitants live in the highlands and 14.2% in the jungle natural region (4.785 million).
The new data reveals that the median age of the Peruvian population rose to 33.6 years.
Over the past five decades, the median age of the population has remained between 23 and 24.
However, beginning in the year 1993, the age at the midpoint of the population began to rise (28.9 years), hitting 33.6 years in 2023, which shows the aging process that the country is going through.
According to the degree of population concentration, 10.151 million people live in Metropolitan Lima (30.1%), with a population 4.7 times larger than that of Piura, the second most populous region in Peru (2.127 million inhabitants), followed by the regions of La Libertad, Arequipa, Cajamarca, Cusco, Junin, and Lambayeque.
In 2023, the young population between 15 and 29 years of age reaches 7.867 million people, a segment that represents 23.3% of the total population. When disaggregated by sex, 4.053 million (51.5%) are women and 3.814 million (48.5%) are men. — NNN-ANDINA
