Iraqi PM Says Corruption Threatens All Gov’t Programmes

BAGHDAD, Jul 9 (NNN-NINA) – Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, said yesterday that, the spread of corruption in Iraq, threatens all government programmes, unless measures are taken against the corrupt and their means.

Al-Sudani gave the warning at a meeting he chaired, over tracking down the suspects and criminals in corruption cases and the funds they have seized, according to a statement by his media office.

The prime minister urged relevant government institutions, to exploit diplomatic and economic relations, to help track down the smuggled funds and corrupt fugitives.

“Corruption threatens all government programmes, and will hinder its plans, unless measures are taken against the corrupt,” he said.

In 2019, tens of thousands of Iraqis held mass anti-government protests for months, demanding comprehensive reform to combat the widespread corruption that has hampered the performance of successive governments since 2003.– NNN-NINA
