LIMA, May 1 (NNN-ANDINA) – Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed it is necessary to find the truth about the Odebrecht case, adding the Public Ministry should deepen the corresponding investigations.

When asked about former PetroPeru Vice-President Miguel Atala’s recent confession —in which he admitted to having acted as frontman for deceased ex-President Alan Garcia to receive US$1.3 million from Odebrecht— the current Head of State mentioned the Inca country’s citizens want to know the truth.

“What we have always asked for and demanded to the justice administration institutions is to get to the truth (…),” the top official expressed.

Likewise, he indicated the people responsible for committing corruption offenses must be punished in an exemplary way.

Furthermore, the statesman believes that finding the truth will strengthen the nation’s democratic institutions.

On the other hand, President Vizcarra recalled that —although he has occasionally commented on the work done by the Prosecutor’s Office and the Judiciary— he has always respected the separation of powers.

“We respect the decisions of the Judicial Branch and Public Ministry,” the Head of State concluded.
