TRIPOLI, Libya, April 30 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Libya’s state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC), announced that, clashes have erupted in Sharara, the country’s largest oil field, revealing no details about the fighting parties.
“The NOC strongly condemns the clashes and the attack that took place last night, on station number 186 of Sharara field, which involved the use of rocket-propelled grenades,” NOC said.
The corporation confirmed that the attack and clashes caused no casualties, and the daily oil production has not been affected.
NOC demanded an “immediate stop to the violence all over the country, including in and around the most important energy facilities.”
Sharara is located some 900 km south of the capital, Tripoli. It has the capacity to produce over 300,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
The corporation’s announcement came, as the eastern-based army and the UN-backed government are fighting over the control of Tripoli, since early April.
The fighting so far has killed more than 270 people, injured over 1,300 others, and forced more than 38,000 people to flee their homes.
Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition, amid insecurity and chaos, ever since the fall of former leader, Muammar Gaddafi, in 2011.– NNN-AGENCIES
