COLOMBO, Jun 28 (NNN-XINHUA) – Officers of Sri Lanka Customs, yesterday, arrested five individuals for trying to smuggle 5.65 kg gold, out of the country, at the Bandaranaike International Airport.
Customs spokesman, Sudattha Silva told journalists that, the arrests were made following a tip-off.
The five suspects were already onboard a flight bound for Chennai, in eastern India, along with the smuggled gold, when the arrests were made, he said.
The suspects have been identified as businessmen from the Colombo area, the spokesman said.
The gold is estimated to be worth around 107 million rupees (about 346,000 U.S. dollars), and further investigations are being carried out by the Sri Lanka Customs.– NNN-XINHUA
