Internet Ban Extended Again In India’s Strife-Torn Manipur State

NEW DELHI, Jun 21 (NNN-PTI) – The government of India’s north-eastern state of Manipur, yesterday extended the local ban on Internet till Jun 25, amid continued violence in the state.

The Internet ban has been in place for six weeks, ever since clashes began in the state, in a bid to prevent misuse by miscreants, for spreading misinformation and rumours or creating panic among the general public, through misleading posts on social media platforms.

Nearly 100 people have been killed and thousands injured, in violent clashes between ethnic communities, which began in the state on May 3. Nearly 50,000 people have been staying in government’s relief camps, after their houses were burnt by miscreants.

The government order said, there was an apprehension about some anti-social elements using social media extensively, for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages, inciting the passion of members of the public, who might have serious repercussions on the law and order situation in Manipur.– NNN-PTI
