Third heat wave in Mexico of over 40 degrees and nine deaths

MEXICO CITY, June 19 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The third heat wave in Mexico continues without giving way to the typical coolness so longed for now in the country, and maintains temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in 23 states with nine deaths.

The most affected were Campeche, Coahuila, Guerrero, Michoacán, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Veracruz, Yucatán and Tamaulipas; In this last entity, the authorities reported the death of a man due to heat stroke.

The Tamaulipas Secretary of Health, Vicente Hernández, reported that the deceased is a 61-year-old day laborer, a resident of the municipality of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, hypertensive and diabetic, who began to feel bad while doing his work.

He went to a local health center, but because he presented complications, he was transferred to a Reynosa hospital, where he died.

The official added there are two adolescents in serious condition for the same cause; one of them, 16 years old, who packs beans, is hospitalized in Reynosa; the other, 12, who is a high school student, is admitted to a hospital in Ciudad Victoria.

In addition, in Nuevo Laredo some schools that do not have air conditioning due to electrical failures sent their students to take classes online to protect them, reported Cesar Bolaños, head of the Regional Center for Educational Development.

Although the thermometers mark in those states between 37 and 45 degrees, the thermal sensation oscillates between 59 and 65 degrees, which greatly affects people who do not take the recommended measures, and particularly children and the elderly.

The problems have intensified due to the fact that in various parts of the country there has been a cut in the supply of electricity and air conditioning and fans have stopped working, which has caused the closure of factories and schools.

The fiber optic Internet and telephone service has also had problems in the recent week due to the intense heat; people complain because the interruptions persist for several hours, so there are crews working in the afternoon and night to fix the damage.

Likewise, the head of the Meteorology department of the Gulf-Central National Water Commission, Jessica Luna Lagunes, explained that June has become the hottest month of 2023.

For example, the Jacatepec meteorological station in Oaxaca, which reviews southern Veracruz, reported that this heat wave has already exceeded the previous historical record, corresponding to June 1998, which was 43.5 degrees. and on the 14th of this month it was 44 and a thermal sensation of up to 60. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
