LIMA, June 19 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported that South Korea and Japan are among the main importers of Peruvian giant squid.
“South Korea and Japan, two large countries in terms of trade, are among the main buyers of the giant squid produced and exported by Peru,” he said.
In this regard, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Juan Carlos Mathews noted that the Asian continent is the main destination for Peruvian giant squid exports (accounting for 60% of total exports).
In fact, he said China, South Korea, Thailand, and Japan are among the top four Asian markets for this product.
“Peruvian giant squid is highly demanded in the Asian market, being the second most important hydro-biological resource exported by Peru after anchovy,” he remarked.
According to the government official, it is important that exports stand out for their quality so as to ensure the country is increasingly better positioned in the world.
Overall, between January and April this year, Peruvian giant squid exports reached US$429 million, a figure three times higher than that reported in the same period last year.
According to Mincetur, China is the main destination, as it accounted for 26% of total sales in the last 12 months. — NNN-ANDINA
