NEW DELHI, Jun 17 (NNN-PTI) – A political row has erupted in Delhi, over the federal government’s move to rename the famous Nehru Memorial Museum and Library as Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society. While the government maintains that, the decision was taken to “express the nation’s deep commitment to democracy,” the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress (INC), called it a “petty act.”
The library is situated inside the premises called “Teen Murti” in the national capital, where the country’s first and longest-serving prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru once lived. Nehru belonged to the INC.
“In a special meeting of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society, it was resolved to change its name to Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society,” said an official statement, issued by the Federal Ministry of Culture, yesterday.
Explaining the need for change in the library’s name, Chairman of the Executive Council, Nripendra Misra emphasised that, the Prime Ministers’ Museum “expresses the nation’s deep commitment to democracy and so the name of the institution should reflect its new form.”– NNN-PTI
