NEW DELHI, Jun 14 (NNN-PTI) – Nine people were killed and 10 others wounded, in fresh violence in India’s north-eastern state of Manipur, local media reported today, quoting police officials.
The killings took place during a firing incident, late last night, in the Khamenlok area, in Kangpokpi district, about 25 km north-east of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.
“There was firing in the village … and nine people were killed and 10 others injured. All the injured have been admitted to hospital, where the condition of one is stated to be critical,” a local newspaper, Hindustan Times, quoted K Shivakanta Singh, a senior police official in Imphal East, as saying.
Following the incident, local authorities rushed government forces to counter the insurgents in the area. Meanwhile, the curfew relaxations have been restricted, after the fresh round of violence in Manipur.
Reports said, over 100 people have died and another 40,000 displaced, since the outbreak of violence over a month ago.
Last month, large-scale violence broke out in the state, during a tribal protest demonstration, over the inclusion of the non-tribal Meiteis community for a scheduled tribe status.
