Internet Ban Extended For Five More Days In Manipur

NEW DELHI, Jun 12 (NNN-PTI) – India’s north-eastern state of Manipur, yesterday, extended a ban on internet services for five more days till Thursday.

Mobile internet services in the state were banned on May 3, when violent clashes broke out among ethnic groups, and broadband services were banned the next day. Since then, the ban has been extended several times, given the prevailing law and order situation.

Violent clashes have killed nearly 100 people and injured over 300, and thousands have been living in relief camps, after their houses were burnt down.

Presently, more than 10,000 security personnel of the Indian Army and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the state, to maintain peace and public order. The country’s Federal Home Minister, Amit Shah, spent three days in the state a couple of weeks ago to take stock of the situation.

Manipur’s Publicity and Information Minister, Sapam Ranjan, said that, no untoward incident has been reported from any part of the state in the last 24 hours, indicating the return of normalcy in the state, according to local media.– NNN-PTI
