Three Killed, Two Injured In Fresh Violence In India’s Manipur

NEW DELHI, Jun 10 (NNN-PTI) – Three people were killed and two others wounded yesterday, in fresh violence in India’s north-eastern state of Manipur, local media reports quoted officials as saying.

Police blame insurgents for the attack in Khoken village, located on the boundary between Kangpokpi and Imphal West district.

“Two people died on the spot, while the third succumbed to injuries later,” a local newspaper, Hindustan Times, reported, quoting a police official.

Last month, large-scale violence broke out in the state, during a tribal protest demonstration, over the inclusion of the non-tribal Meiteis community, for a scheduled tribe status. The call for protest was given by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM).

Scheduled tribes in India are officially designated as disadvantaged socio-economic groups. They are given reservations in education and jobs to improve their lives.

Thousands of people took part in the rally, during which violence broke out between the tribals and non-tribals. Schools, houses, churches, vehicles and public properties were set ablaze by protesting mobs in the state.

Reports said, over 100 people have died and another 40,000 displaced, since the outbreak of the violence.– NNN-PTI
