BISSAU, June 9 (NNN-XINHUA) — The PAI Terra Ranka coalition, an opposition group led by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, has won Guinea-Bissau’s parliamentary elections, taking 54 of the 102 seats at stake, according to provisional results released Thursday by the National Electoral Commission.
President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s Movement for Democratic Alternation came second with 29 seats, followed by the Party for Social Renewal with 12 seats.
The Workers’ Party, led by Agriculture Minister Botche Cande and taking part in an election for the first time, gained six seats, against one for Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam’s Assembly of the People United-Democratic Party of Guinea-Bissau.
Some 900,000 voters were called to the polls to elect new members of parliament for a five-year term. The vote was conducted peacefully under the supervision of 230 international observers. — NNN-XINHUA
