Xanana Gusmao’s Party Officially Announced As Winner Of Timor-Leste’s May Election

JAKARTA, Jun 7 (NNN-ANTARA) – The National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) party, led by former prime minister, Xanana Gusmao, has won the Timor-Leste parliamentary election held in May, the country’s Court of Appeal announced late Monday in Dili.

The CNRT won 41.6 percent of popular votes, compared to 25.8 percent for the ruling party, Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin), led by former prime minister, Mari Alkatiricurrent.

Democratic Party, Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHNUTO), and the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) of current Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, followed with 9.3 percent, 7.5 percent and 5.9 percent, respectively.

The result showed the CNRT obtained 31 seats in parliament, compared to 21 seats previously.

Local media reported yesterday that, following the result, the CNRT and the Democratic Party officially made an agreement to form a coalition government.

Timor-Leste’s parliamentary election, the fifth since its independence in 2002, was held on May 21, with the participation of 17 political parties. Voter turnout in this election was 79.28 percent, or around 705,683 votes, of the 890,145 registered voters.– NNN-ANTARA
