TOKYO, Jun 6 (NNN-NHK) – A pedestrian was reported dead, after a car hit the building of a fire station, in Japan’s Tokyo area yesterday, local police reported.
Around 4:20 p.m. local time, a passenger car got onto the sidewalk and crashed into the fire station building, in the city of Machida in Tokyo Metropolis, hitting a pedestrian in his 60s.
The man was confirmed dead after being transported to a hospital, said the local police.
According to the police, the passenger car was trying to get onto the driveway, after leaving the parking lot of a drugstore, opposite the fire station, but somehow got on the sidewalk across the driveway and hit the man.
The driver, who is now 82 years old, was slightly injured.
Official data showed that, in 2022, the number of deadly traffic accidents caused by drivers aged 75 or over in Japan, rose to 379, as the country faces rising aging population challenges.– NNN-NHK
