LIMA, June 3 (NNN-ANDINA) — Diplomatic personnel from the Peruvian diplomatic mission in Mexico have received threats against their lives, disclosed Prime Minister Alberto Otarola who requested the Mexican Government to reinforce the security at said facilities.
“It is a very threatening, very intimidating recording” the one received by Peruvian diplomatic representatives, he said, adding “I have listened to it, and the threats are serious.”.
Therefore, the Peruvian Government representative requested that an investigation be carried out in order to determine the responsibilities linked to these acts.
Similarly, the Prime Minister used his social media channels to put on record what had occurred and to condemn the intimidating acts aimed at the diplomats.
Otarola pointed out that, although Mexican authorities have redoubled the corresponding security, this “is an issue that we do not want to ignore.”
In this sense, he asked for guarantees to be granted for the integrity and lives of the charge d’affaires and the three diplomats who work at the embassy headquarters, as well as those who are at the consulate.
Otarola recalled that, as a result of the decision by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador not to recognize the Peruvian Government and to criticize it, relations with the North American country are only at the level of charges d’affaires.
Due to these incidents, Peru definitively withdrew its ambassador from Mexico.
Mexican President Lopez Obrador (AMLO) has mentioned the possibility of also breaking off all kinds of relations with his Peruvian counterpart after the Peruvian Congress had declared him ‘persona non grata’ because of his political statements against Peru.
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that on the night of Wednesday, May 31, Peru’s Chargé d’Affaires in Mexico received a death threat through an anonymous message sent via WhatsApp to the emergency cell phone of the Consulate General located in Mexico City.
Immediately, the Mexican Police was informed about the act, and the corresponding complaint was filed at the Prosecutor’s Office of the host country.
Likewise, a diplomatic note was sent to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting that the corresponding investigations be carried out and that the security and guarantees be provided to Peruvian officials.
At the request of Peru’s mission, Mexican authorities have reinforced security at the Peruvian Embassy headquarters, the consular site, as well as at the Chargé d’Affaires’ home.
The Peruvian Police Attaché Office in Mexico is in permanent contact with police authorities of the host country, following up on the case and the investigations.
Lastly, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that the operations at our Embassy and Consulate General in Mexico continue normally. — NNN-ANDINA
