Bangladesh Opposition Leader Arrested For “Threatening To Kill” Premier

DHAKA, May 26 (NNN-BSS) – A Bangladesh opposition stalwart was arrested yesterday, in Rajshahi city, some 256 km west of the capital Dhaka, for “threatening to kill” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a speech, on May 19.

Rafiqul Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Additional, told journalists that, police yesterday arrested Abu Sayeed Chand, the Rajshahi district convenor of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), from the Hargram area of the city.

A video of the BNP leader’s speech went viral recently as he said, “Our only demand is now to send Sheikh Hasina to the grave.”

At least eight more cases were filed against the BNP leader in Rajshahi and elsewhere in the country since then.

Hasina’s ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party, has been organising processions and rallies across the country in protest against the threat.

Senior BNP spokesman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, the party or its leaders and activists do not want to take anyone’s life or hurt anyone in any way.

“We want Sheikh Hasina’s regime to end. Let there be an election under a neutral government,” he said.

On Wednesday, Hasina again made it clear that the next general election in Bangladesh will be held under her AL government.

Hasina’s AL party now eyes for the fourth consecutive victory in the election, slated for early 2024. It is currently facing challenges from ex-Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia’s BNP, as Hasina did not heed their demand for a non-party caretaker government, to hold the polls.– NNN-BSS
