DAR ES SALAAM, May 20 (NNN-IRIN) – Hyenas have killed at least 24 people in five years, in Karatu district in Manyara region, in northern Tanzania, a Member of Parliament said yesterday.
Cecilia Pareso, the MP on women special seats, told the House in the capital, Dodoma, that 24 people were killed in Endamarariek ward, in the district, located between Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro conservation area.
The lawmaker urged the government to take urgent measures, to control the hyenas from wreaking more havoc in the area.
In response to concerns raised by the lawmaker, the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Mary Masanja, said, the ministry hunted the hyenas in Endamarariek ward, from 2019 to 2022, and killed seven of the wild animals, and destroyed 11 of their habitats.
Masanja said, the ministry was continuing to crack down on clans of hyenas in different parts of the country, before they caused disastrous consequences.– NNN-IRIN
