Sri Lanka Remains on Alert after Terrorist Attacks

COLOMBO, April 26 (NNN-PRESNA LATINA) – Sri Lanka remains on alert on Thursday after the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks that killed 359 people and wounded 500.
This Thursday about 4,000 police officers and soldiers were deployed throughout the country with special powers to search and arrest without a warrant to ensure security, confirmed the Ministry of Defense.

After the deadly bombings in churches and luxury hotels, President Maithripala Sirisena approved that provision with the aim of avoiding possible new attacks and capturing all those involved in the events of Easter Sunday.

Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean where hindouism, budhism, islam and catholicism coexist in harmony until the hideous attacks last Sunday. According to the statement from the Defense Ministry, 3,984 soldiers will guard churches, other religious dependencies and ‘vulnerable points throughout the national territory.

On this day, the ecclesiastical authorities also informed that the Catholic churches of Sri Lanka will remain closed until the situation improves, while the search for suspects of the suicide attacks continues.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education took measures to strengthen security in schools, before the resumption of classes next Monday.

To date, 75 suspects have been arrested since Sunday for their alleged involvement in the simultaneous explosions that massacred people who were listening to mass in three churches and staying in four hotels.
