40 Percent Of Japanese Youth Want Gov’t To Make Higher Education Free: Survey

TOKYO, May 7 (NNN-NHK) – A recent survey of Japanese youth between the ages of 10 and 18, shows 40 percent want the government to put making higher education free, a top priority of its policies for children.

The online survey, conducted by the Nippon Foundation, covered 10,000 individuals in Mar. Respondents could choose more than one answer.

Asked what they want the government to prioritise in its policies for children, 40 percent of the respondents said, making high school and university tuition-free, while 37 percent said, creating a society with no bullying.

Answers to protecting children from crime and thoroughly listening to the voices of children in serious need of help both surpassed 30 percent.

Eriko Takahashi of the Nippon Foundation said, some children wrote in the survey that they were hesitant about requesting the education they want, because of the financial situation of their parents.

She said, the government should spread the knowledge that children have the right to have their opinions respected, and come up with concrete measures to improve the situation.– NNN-NHK
