Tanzania: TASAC to develop own search and rescue plan

DAR ES SALAAM, May 4 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — TANZANIA Shipping Agency Corporation (TASAC) is planning to develop a national plan for search and rescue that will identify and specify institutions in event of disasters.

The move aims to strengthen the country water, air and road transportation safety, which are the catalysts of the economy.

TASAC plans to include institutions like Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), Fire and Rescue Force, Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Tanzania Peoples Defence Forces (TPDF)’s Navy Command, Marine Police, and the Tanzania Maritime Institute (DMI).

TASAC Director General, Kaimu Mkeyenge said recently during a training organised by International Marine Organisation (IMO) that the special plan will also task to identify the necessary equipment, training and human resources.

“The country needs to oversee the search and rescue matters as one way of keeping our reputation high and attracting more investors and trades,” Mkeyenge said.

He said the plan will also include all sectors namely urban and rural including highways surface transport, air transport sector as well as marine transport and this is TASAC’s primary responsibility hence coordinate the national plan.

Additionally, TASAC reminded marine transport operators to ensure that their vessels meet the needed quality standards before embarking on any journey to prevent unnecessary marine accidents.

TASAC provides role of maritime administration, regulate maritime sector and facilitate shipping business and carry out shipping agency business. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
