LIMA, May 3 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peru and Japan are about to celebrate their 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. In light of this, both countries have agreed to boost bilateral trade as a tool for development.

In this regard, the Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that Japan was Peru’s fourth trading partner in the world last year.

In a post on Twitter, it noted that Japan was the third largest destination for Peruvian exports in 2022 and the 12th largest source of imports to Peru.

According to the government agency, the bilateral exchange between Peru and Japan totaled US$4.2 billion in said year.

In addition, such bilateral exchange witnessed an increase of 6% compared to 2021.

It should be noted that Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi will pay an official visit to Peru on May 3 as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Hayashis visit comes five years after the last one made to the South American country by a Japanese official from his hierarchy.

The Asian nation has recently developed a policy of rapprochement with the Americas. Part of it are the trips made by its Foreign minister, who this year paid working visits to Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, and the United States.

In addition to the strong ties developed through migration, Japan’s relationship with Peru is based on the validity of various bilateral agreements.

One of them is the joint declaration signed in 2016, which established the status of ‘strategic partners’ between both nations.

Similarly, Peru and Japan are signatories of the Preliminary Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation.

The two countries are also signatories of economic partnership agreements, investment promotion, as well as against double taxation and tax evasion.

Likewise, Peru and Japan share spaces at multilateral associations. Thus, both are members of the Asia-Pacific Economic (APEC) Forum and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Besides, Japan participates as an observer country in the Pacific Alliance.

On the other hand, at the beginning of the year, the Japanese Government —through its ambassador to Peru— delivered 12 ambulances donated for emergency care. — NNN-ANDINA
