Jordan weighs building nuclear reactors with Russia

AMMAN, April 26 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Jordan is weighing the possibility of building low-power nuclear reactors and is analyzing offers from specialized companies, including those from Russia, authorities said in this capital.

Khaled Tukan, chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), told the Sputnik news agency that his institution is comparing technologies and expects to receive government approval to start negotiations soon.

Tukan also admitted that there are still problems with water supply to cool the reactors and the funding of the works. They are studying solutions to find an optimal variant for Jordan’s conditions.

According to the JAEC chairman, low-power nuclear reactors would be used for water purification and power generation.

The official recalled that the project to build a high-power nuclear plant in Jordan, in conjunction with the Russian company Rosatom, agreed upon between the parties in 2015, collided with technical and financial difficulties, so now this new variant is being analyzed. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
