Sri Lankan President Calls for Resignation of Top Security Officials

COLOMBO, April 25 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday called for the resignation of two high-ranking officers in charge of the country”s security, after the Easter Sunday bombings that killed 359 people.

According to official, the president fired Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and Police Chief Pujith Jayasundara.

The announcement comes one day after the disclosure that intelligence services in Sri Lanka did not act despite early warnings on the risk of an imminently Islamist attack.

The Police reported on Wednesday about 359 people, including foreign tourists, have been killed and more than 500 have been wounded during the Easter bombings against several churches and luxury hotels.

Cabinet minister and government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne attributed the bombings to local religious group National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ), and said they are investigating whether they received any support from outside.

The terrorist group, self-styled Islamic State (IS) claimed on Tuesday responsibility for one of the deadliest events in the history of Sri Lanka.
