DHAKA, April 17 (NNN-BSS) — Seven carriages and a locomotive of Dhaka-bound passenger train Sonar Bangla Express were derailed when it hit a freight train at Hasanpur station of Nangalkot in Cumilla.
“Dhaka-bound Sonar Bangla Express from Chattogram hit a freight train at Hasanpur station at 6.45pm caused its locomotive and seven carriages-four Sobhon class chair coaches and three AC coaches to derail,” Railway Ministry’s information office Shariful Alam told BSS.
About 60 people were injured while 10 of them are in critical condition.
He said the accident took place when Sonar Bangla Express entered a loop where the freight train was stationary.
An official of the divisional railway (Chattogram) said a four-member probe body, led by Divisional Transport Officer (Chattogram) Tarique Md Imran, has been formed to investigate the accident.
According to the Election Commission (EC) office, 12 EC officials are among the injured as they were returning to the capital by the train after attending a training session in Chattogram on the by-poll to Chattogram-8 constituency.
The EC office, however, confirmed that none of its officials was injured critically.
The train services on the Dhaka-Sylhet-Chattogram routes have, however, resumed at around 9pm after two and a half hours of the accident. — NNN-BSS
