COLOMBO, Apr 16 (NNN-XINHUA) – The Sri Lankan navy said that, it busted a drug smuggling ring, during a raid yesterday, and arrested three people with 62 kg of Kerala cannabis.
The suspects were travelling in an Indian dhow, in the Sri Lankan waters, west of the Delft Island, in northern Jaffna, the navy said in a statement.
The cannabis was stored in two sacks, which contained 23 packages, with an estimated street value of over 20 million rupees (63,000 U.S. dollars), according to the navy.
The suspects, the drugs and the Indian dhow were handed over to the local police, the navy said.
The navy conducts regular patrols and search operations in the coastal and sea areas around the island, to prevent the influx of drugs into the country.– NNN-XINHUA
