Workers trapped after building collapses in Nigeria’s economic hub

LAGOS, April 13 (NNN-XINHUA) — An official of Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency on Wednesday confirmed that a three-story building under construction collapsed in Lagos, the country’s economic hub, leaving several workers trapped.

Ibrahim Farinloye, coordinator of the agency in the southwest region, told Xinhua that some workers were trapped when the building under construction collapsed in the Banana Island area of Lagos, while the exact figure of trapped ones remained unknown.

“We are mobilizing to respond,” he added.

Building collapses often occur in Nigeria, which local experts normally attribute to various factors such as aging structures, non-compliance with building planning and regulations, and the use of substandard materials during construction. — NNN-XINHUA
