WASHINGTON, April 24 (NNN- PRESNA LATINA) – The president of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened on Tuesday to retaliate the European Union (EU) for the tariffs imposed on motorcycles of the American manufacturer Harley-Davidson.
From his Twitter account, Trump cited that the company has suffered with the 31 percent tariffs currently imposed by the block, a figure that will increase to 66 percent in June 2021.
‘It’s so unfair to the United States. Let’s reciprocate,’ said the White House chief without giving details of the proposal.
In 2018, Trump strongly criticized Harley-Davidson for producing outside U.S. territory, a decision of the entity in order to counteract the levies.
Earlier this year, Harley Davidson warned that tariffs announced by the EU in response to Washington’s imposition of taxes on steel and aluminum would cost him 100 to 120 million dollars by 2019.
As the company explained on Tuesday, the strengthening of its factory in Thailand to serve the European market allowed it to limit damage in the first quarter.
Net earnings fell 27 percent to $127.9 million from January to March, and sales declined 10.4 percent to $1.38 billion in the same period, but were higher than forecasts of $1.2 billion.
Press reports said Trump’s comments came at a time when the United States and the European Union were about to resume trade negotiations.
