MARSEILLE, April 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A building in the southern French port city of Marseille collapsed, police said early Sunday, though it was unclear whether there were any victims.
The streets around the building, located in the central La Plaine district, were cordoned off and choked with dust, with many emergency personnel on site.
“A building has collapsed, emergency services are on site,” police officials said.
“The cause is not determined.”
Firefighters could not provide any information at this stage.
A resident who lives on a street perpendicular to the fallen building said that the sound of the crash “was huge”.
“It sounded like an explosion,” said Gilles, who declined to provide his last name.
Another major structural collapse took place in Marseille in November 2018, when two buildings in the working-class district of Noailles caved in, killing eight people.
The buildings were in a serious state of dilapidation, casting a light on the city’s housing standards. — NNN-AGENCIES
