Ghana beefs up security after deadly gunmen attack

ACCRA, April 6 (NNN-XINHUA) — The Ghanaian government beefed up security in the northern city of Bawku in the Upper East Region after unknown gunmen killed an immigration officer and wounded two others on Tuesday, said an official Wednesday.

“At the level of the Regional Security Council, we have intensified our efforts to bring the violence under control in the city, and the government is also helping with the deployment of 1,000 personnel of the special forces, including police and military,” Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu told media.

He urged residents to volunteer to provide information about the perpetrators of Tuesday’s assault to the authorities.

Bawku, a few kilometers from the border with Burkina Faso, has recently seen a spate of armed unrest due to a protracted chieftaincy dispute and criminal activities. — NNN-XINHUA
