CHICLAYO (Lambayeque region, Peru), April 6 (NNN-ANDINA) — Approximately 80% of the urban area of Tucume —a district located in the province and region of Lambayeque, 33 kilometers from the city of Chiclayo— was completely flooded early on Wednesday after more than 10 hours of heavy rain.
Tucume Municipality General Manager Miguel Paz requested humanitarian aid for the entire population, whose territory has been surrounded by rainwater, which reached one and a half meters high.
Paz remarked that heavy rain has caused the collapse of more than a hundred houses and a health center, whose equipment and medicines have been damaged by water.
Similarly, Federico Villarreal School in said city is completely flooded, thus affecting its infrastructure.
The local official noted that before this rain, the Municipality’s Civil Defense Office had recorded 1,000 people affected, but after last night’s rain, the figure is expected to have tripled.
“The city is situated in the lower part of a hollow, which can be extremely detrimental during heavy rains,” he warned.
Moreover, the municipal spokesperson highlighted the support of regional and national authorities, who provided tents, food, heavy machinery, motorized pumps, and hoses to remove rainwater from homes in urban and rural areas.
Meanwhile, several provinces across Piura region are witnessing moderate to heavy rains accompanied by electrical storms. They are expected to intensify in the next few hours, the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi) has warned.
Moreover, the country’s weather agency indicated that a similar situation is observed in other jurisdictions in northern Peru.
Via Twitter, the agency attached to the Ministry of Environment (Minam) underscored that the provinces of Piura, Morropon, and Ayabaca are hit by rains and electrical storms.
Meanwhile, ASisMet —a blog that provides information on issues of Astronomy, Seismology, and Meteorology— on Tuesday reported the development of an electrical storm in Lambayeque (in western Olmos) at 10:40 p.m. and that strong electrical storms continued to move between the provinces of Piura and Morropon. — NNN-ANDINA
