Heavy rains continue in Peru: 637 districts on northern coast and highlands at risk

LIMA, April 5 (NNN-ANDINA) — Moderate-to-extreme intensity rains will fall until Thursday, April 6, along the country’s northern coast and highlands, which puts 637 districts at risk of possible landslips, landslides, or other types of slippage of earth, the National Center for Estimation, Prevention and Disaster Risk Reduction (Cenepred) has reported.

According to the risk scenario report prepared by said institution, Cajamarca region hosts the largest number of districts at very high risk (100).

Next in line are Ancash (63), Ayacucho (44), Huancavelica (43), Piura (27), Apurimac (18), Lima (16), La Libertad (12), Junin (12), Arequipa (8), Cusco (7), Puno (5), and Lambayeque (3), making a total of 358 districts.

Similarly, 279 jurisdictions in said regions, in addition to Pasco and Tumbes, are at high risk.

According to a forecast issued by the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi), heavy rains will occur, mainly in Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, and La Libertad, starting Tuesday, April 4, which will be accompanied by electrical storms and gusts of wind reaching nearly 35 kilometers per hour.

Likewise, hail is likely to occur in localized areas and snow is expected to fall in isolated spots above 2,800 and 4,000 meters. 

Rain events are expected for Wednesday, with an accumulated rainfall of above 45 mm/day in the northern highlands, nearly 14 mm/day in the central highlands, and close to 10 mm/day in the southern highlands.

Moreover, rainfall of more than 75 mm/day is expected in Tumbes and along the coast of Piura; besides, rains with an accumulated rainfall of 20 mm/day and 15 mm/day are expected in Lambayeque and La Libertad, respectively.

Other regions alerted by Senamhi are: Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Ica, Junin, Lima, Moquegua, Pasco, Puno, and Tacna. — NNN-ANDINA
