LIMA, April 4 (NNN-ANDINA) — The volume of fish landings experienced a significant increase of more than 88% in February, thus marking two consecutive months of positive results and reaching a record of more than 280,000 metric tons, the Ministry of Production (Produce) reported.
The result responds to the increase in landing of resources exploited by artisanal fishing and, to a lesser extent, to the increase in the landings of anchovy destined for the flour industry.
The sector with the highest positive result was landings of resources for direct human consumption, whose catch volume amounted to 236,700 metric tons (119.7%) compared to February 2022 (107,800 metric tons), favored by oceanographic conditions that enabled the presence of the aforementioned species along the coast of Peru.
Among the main species with the highest landings are giant squid, horse mackerel, mackerel, and anchovy, which resulted in increased landings of frozen (228.2%) and canned (65.4%) products, as well as those for consumption in fresh condition (9.4%).
Regarding landings for indirect human consumption, they increased 5.6%, registering a landing volume of anchovy that increased to 43,900 tons, 2,300 tons higher than February 2022 (41,500 tons). To a larger extent, the landings for indirect human consumption come from northern and central areas, mainly from the ports of Malabrigo, Callao, Carquin, and Chimbote.
Said landings have been recorded until the first week of February, when the second 2022 anchovy fishing season ended, in accordance with Ministerial Resolution No. 043-2023-Produce.
It should be noted that the extractive fishing sector’s gross production value experienced a growth of 9% in February 2023 due to the higher production value of the resources destined for both direct (9.2%) and indirect (5.6%) human consumption. — NNN-ANDINA
