LIMA, April 4 (NNN-ANDINA) — Pres Dina Boluarte affirmed that the second landing strip of Jorge Chavez International Airport marks a milestone in Peru’s history.
The Head of State explained that this will turn the country’s main air terminal into the most modern airport in South America.
“As President of the Republic, I am proud to participate in the commencement of operations of a long-awaited work: the second landing strip and the new Air Traffic Control Tower at Jorge Chavez Airport,” she said during the ceremony marking the start of operations on the new runway.
Thus, the President stated that the new infrastructure will promote growth and progress, which will boost the economy and open up great opportunities for Peru, allowing the airport to receive around 30 million passengers a year.
“From previously receiving 23 million passengers a year, with the second runway and new terminal, Jorge Chavez International Airport will have the capacity to receive 30 million passengers a year and thus become the most important and modern air terminal in South America,” she said.
Boluarte remarked that the work will provide significant benefits to the country since it is designed to receive “all types of commercial aircraft operating in the international industry,” and includes an alternate runway that could be used in case of emergency.
“One of the major benefits of having two operating runways is that, in the event of an incident on one of them, the other can be used as an emergency runway. It will no longer be necessary to land at a nearby regional airport,” she said.
Meanwhile, Transportation and Communications Minister Paola Lazarte affirmed that Peru is on its way to becoming one of the main air hubs in the region.
“We are witnessing an important step that is leading us to become one of the main air connection hubs across the continent, and all this is the result of the work promoted by the current Government,” she emphasized.
The Cabinet member stated that the infrastructure of the new air traffic control tower has been equipped with the latest technology.
“This tower, more than 60 meters high, will provide air traffic control for the two landing strips,” she remarked.
It should be noted that the new control tower is 65 meters high, and the second runway is 3,480 meters long.
In addition, more than 10 kilometers of new taxiways were built; besides, approach lights and beacon systems were installed, among other things.
This modern infrastructure is expected to serve all types of aircraft and provide better services to users. — NNN-ANDINA
