CUSCO (Peru), March 20 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu railway service has gone back to normal, following the unblocking and cleaning of a section at kilometer 110 of the railway line, which was covered by mud, land, rocks, and trees in the early hours of Sunday, due to heavy rains.
The frequencies offered by railway companies Peru Rail and Inca Rail have resumed without problems since Sunday afternoon.
The service resumption took place after the concessionary company responsible for the maintenance of the railway, Ferrocarril Transandino, completed the works to remove debris from the affected track.
The railway that connects Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu stations was affected in the Cedrobamba sector, where a slope movement occurred last Sunday due to heavy rains in the district of Machu Picchu (Urubamba Province).
This phenomenon affected hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists, who were about to visit the Inca wonder or returned to the city of Cusco.
The Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco announced that it will assist tourists whose visit was delayed.
The aforementioned companies, which are part of a private sector’s group of firms that provide special offers to promote economic recovery and maintain their promotions that include discounts of up to 35% on their frequencies.
Peru Rail states that said discounts are available on Cyber Days. Between March 27 and 29, people will see rates starting at US$35 for “Expedition” services and at US$56 for “Vistadome” services.
Finally, it was reported that Machu Picchu Town and areas on the edge of the jungle in Cusco have recorded rainfall in recent days, which is typical of the rainy season. — NNN-ANDINA
