MONTEVIDEO, March 22 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Unions that are part of the Uruguayan PIT-CNT central union are getting ready to participate in the general strike of March 23 under the slogan ‘Against the government’s pension reform’.
The protest will include a concentration in front of the promenade of the University of the Republic, on 18 de Julio Avenue in this capital.
The vice president of the PIT-CNT, Jose Lorenzo Lopez, explained that thousands of workers will march from there to the Legislative Palace, where the transformation of the pension system is being analyzed by a special commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
According to Lopez, each union can adapt the strike to its own reality and decide how to do it. The Association of Secondary Education Teachers of Montevideo will stop morning and afternoon activities but will return to classrooms during the night shifts.
The National Federation of Secondary Education Teachers responded in the same way.
Private education will recess for 24 hours, while the “Federacion Uruguaya de Magisterio” will define its response today.
The Association of Bankers of Uruguay ratified its participation, while the National Union of Transport Workers will join the protest but will not stop traveling, as they will do on the day that the official proposal should be voted on, in the plenary of deputies.
The vice president of the PIT-CNT summarized the reasons for the strike and affirmed that the pension reform means that the workers will work more to earn less pension.
The government initiative includes gradually raising the retirement age from 60 to 65, among other changes. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
