TASHKENT, Mar 16 (NNN-UzA) – Uzbekistan’s Senate, the upper house of parliament, approved the draft constitutional law and adopted a resolution on holding a referendum on the draft law, on Apr 30, this year.
The Senate approved the draft constitutional law at a plenary session on Tuesday, after the draft law was approved last week by the Legislative Chamber, the lower house of parliament, according to the Senate.
The number of articles of the draft Constitution has increased from the current 128 to 155, and the norms, from 275 to 434. Accordingly, 65 percent of the text of the draft law has been updated.
According to the Senate, the proposed new edition of the Constitution will commit the country to a greater protection of human rights, fair and open democratic values, and equality within Uzbekistan’s diverse multi-faith and multi-ethnic population.
The current Constitution of Uzbekistan was adopted in Dec, 1992.– NNN-UzA
