LIMA, March 15 (NNN-ANDINA) — Since Jan 1, heavy rains in Peru have left 50 dead, 48 injured, 5 missing people, as well as 7,223 victims and more than 45,000 affected citizens in various regions, National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) Chief Carlos Yañez reported.

According to the official, 1,303 houses are destroyed, 1,578 uninhabitable, and 20,264 affected.

Concerning infrastructure, there are 45 classrooms destroyed, 546 affected, 133 uninhabitable, plus 48 destroyed health establishments and other 90 damaged.

Besides, 60.9 kilometers of rural road are damaged and 6 kilometers destroyed, in addition to 53 kilometers of destroyed highway and 565 affected kilometers.

The Indeci head reported that there are 289 irrigation channels affected, 95 kilometers of irrigation channels destroyed, 160 bridges damaged and 97 destroyed.

Regarding agriculture and livestock, he pointed out that there are 23,473 hectares of damaged crops, 11,182 of lost crops, in addition to 167,527 affected and 28,117 dead animals.

Furthermore, he mentioned that eight state of emergency declarations were issued, which are in force in various regions affected by heavy rains, totaling 962 districts declared in emergency as of Monday evening.

Humanitarian aid The official underlined that Indeci, since the beginning of the state of emergency in Ucayali, Cajamarca, Arequipa, and Lima, has delivered 256.98 tons of humanitarian aid goods —including non-food and food items.

The official also specified that, given the declaration of emergency on March 4 in 233 districts (located in Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, and La Libertad regions), 128.82 tons of humanitarian aid goods were delivered —including food and non-food items.

This aid —he explained— is requested by regional governments once they have exceeded their operational and financial capacity.

“We have 23 warehouses nationwide that rely on the capacity to serve regional governments at their request,” he pointed out.

Moreover, Yañez affirmed that humanitarian aid will continue to be delivered and flights will depart this Tuesday to the affected regions which had requested Indeci’s support —particularly regarding food supplies. — NNN-ANDINA
