QUITO, March 2 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Ecuador’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) reported that it will maintain on alert until May 27 to contain bird flu in the Andean country.
An official report revealed that from last November to Feb 15 outbreaks were detected in the provinces of Cotopaxi, Bolivar, Tunguragua, Pichincha and Azuay.
About 1,193,491 birds were affected with the flu in these territories, most of them to egg producers, the document detailed.
According to MAG, as part of the actions to be carried out to contain the virus in poultry, from next Friday they will begin vaccination with the first four million doses that arrived in the country last week.
During the first phase, “Agrocalidad” will allocate the doses to the farms where the cases were registered and, one week later, they will continue with other poultry breeding sites that have adopted biosecurity measures.
In addition, they believe that the implementation of the measure will contribute to reduce the mortality rate of infested birds from 80 to 40 percent.
According to the World Organization for Animals Health, avian flu is also present in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile, among others. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
