Syria’s Assad receives Russian delegation over Astana meeting

DAMASCUS, Syria, April 20 (NNN-SANA) – Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, on Friday received a Russian delegation, which was coming from Saudi Arabia.

The Syrian leader received the delegation, headed by Russian President, Vladimir Putin’s Special Envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev.

The meeting touched upon the upcoming Astana meeting on Syria, and Assad underlined the importance of ongoing coordination between both sides, to make the Astana meeting successful, said the report.

Assad also stressed the need to overcome obstacles that hindered the implementation of the deescalation zones’ deal in Idlib province, which was taken over by the ultra-radical rebels who didn’t abide by the deal.

For his side, Lavrentiev voiced his confidence that the Astana talks would succeed, to make a progress in terms of fighting terrorism and achieving development in the political process.

Development is also expected to be achieved in the issues of refugees and missing people.

Meanwhile, local reports said, the Russian delegation brought a Saudi initiative for the Syrian crisis.

The Saudi initiative has not been announced yet, but the reports said, the atmosphere of the meeting was positive.– NNN-SANA
