Caricom Summit addresses situation in Haiti

NASSAU, Feb 19 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) called for a greater leadership role to address the deterioration of the situation in Haiti, reports the official website of the institution.

Haiti is a member state of the organization with which there are moral and political ties and obligations, highlights the Final Declaration of the 44th Meeting of Heads of Government of the organization, CARICOM Today, added.

The Heads of Government signed the Declaration stating that “the organization needs decisive actions as soon as possible due to the growing insecurity and its widespread impact on all aspects of Haitian lives,” according to the entity’s website.

The regional leaders reiterated the relevance of a political agreement adopted on December 21st, 2022 to achieve a so-called National Consensus towards an Inclusive Transition and Transparent Elections in Haiti.

The authorities ratified the proposal, launched by Haiti’s interim prime minister Ariel Henry, and called an early meeting in Jamaica “among the interested parties.”

The incumbents also agreed to participate in another summit in Haiti with the country’s authorities to help develop a plan to restore security and the rule of law.

The Final Declaration of the summit specifies the forms of security assistance provided by Canada, whose Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended as a guest. The document also emphasizes on the strengthening of the Haitian National Police in its role to protect the population against criminal activities.

The issue of the Haitian crisis was one of the main subject at the event, which began on February 16th and ended on the 17th, with an agenda that included topics on the development of the bloc, including possible strategies to move towards a one market economy of its own. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
