Bangladeshi Ruling Party Nominated Presidential Candidate

DHAKA, Feb 13 (NNN-BSS) – Md Shahabuddin Chuppu, a former Anti-Corruption Commission official, is all set to become the next president of Bangladesh, as the country’s ruling party nominated him as its presidential candidate, yesterday.

A delegation of Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina’s ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party, led by its General Secretary, Obaidul Quader, also Bangladeshi Road, Transport and Bridges minister, submitted his nomination papers to the Election Commission in Dhaka yesterday.

Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner, Kazi Habibul Awal, announced on Jan 25, this year that, the country’s presidential election will be held on Feb 19.

According to the schedule, submission of nomination papers to the Chief Election Commission office, ended at 4.00 p.m. local time, yesterday.

The incumbent President, Abdul Hamid, cannot be elected president for another term, as the country’s constitution allows a maximum of two terms for a person in the post of president.

Hamid’s second and last tenure will expire on Apr 24.

According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, members of parliament are voters in the presidential election.

As AL has the absolute majority in the current parliament, it is assumed that Md Shahabuddin Chuppu will be the next president of Bangladesh.

Also, there is no possibility of any party other than the AL, nominating a candidate to the presidential polls.– NNN-BSS
