MOSCOW, Russia, April 18 (NNN-ITAR TASS) – Russia and the Arab League (AL) have agreed that, Syria’s return to the league will help the organisation contribute to a peaceful settlement in the war-torn country, Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said.
“Now, due to the absence of Syria in this structure, the Arab League is constrained in its ability to help move in this direction,” Lavrov said, at a press conference.
On Tuesday, Lavrov participated in the fifth ministerial session of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum in Moscow.
Syria’s membership in the AL was suspended in Nov, 2011, after the outbreak of armed conflict in the country.
According to Lavrov, the situation in Syria is more or less stable, although a number of problems are outstanding, including remaining terrorists in Idlib province.
Russia, Turkey, Iran and the UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, are working on the formation of an intra-Syrian constitutional committee, which would initiate constitutional reform in the country.
Lavrov said, the committee should be established as soon as possible.– NNN-ITAR TASS
