LIMA, April 18 (NNN-ANDINA) – Alan Garcia, who served twice as President of Peru, has died in Lima at the age of 69 over a self-inflicted shot to the head.
The ex-Head of State on Wednesday morning shot himself after authorities arrived at his Lima home with a 10-day preliminary detention order against him linked to the Odebrecht corruption case investigation.
Garcia was in the operating room, and his health was in a “very serious condition,” said Health Minister Zulema Tomas after he was taken to Lima-based Casimiro Ulloa Hospital.
Dozens of police have redoubled security at the health facility, where his relatives and fellow party-members are gathered.
As is known, the Judiciary ordered the preliminary arrest of Garcia, as well as of the former Secretary-General of the Presidency Luis Nava and former PetroPeru Vice-President Miguel Atala, and their respective children Jose Antonio Nava and Samir Atala, among other people.
The judicial decision was made at the request of the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group Prosecutor, Jose Domingo Perez, who is investigating Garcia within the framework of the Odebrecht probe.
