CUSCO (Peru), Jan 22 (NNN-ANDINA) — Starting Saturday, the entry of tourists to the llaqta or Machu Picchu Citadel and the Inca Trail Network will be suspended until further notice due to the current situation and to safeguard the integrity of visitors, the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco and the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary Directorate at the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) announced.
In a statement, the institutions affirmed that all support will be provided to domestic and foreign visitors who are affected in the use of tickets, from Jan 21 until one month after the conclusion of mobilizations, or they request the refund.
The Urubamba-Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu railway suffered damages in different sections because rail structures were lifted and moved, Ferrocarril Trasandino S.A. concessionaire reported.
These events occurred on Thursday when the population was complying with a stoppage in the Sacred Valley.
The damage forced the suspension of the train service until further notice.
Currently, there are 417 people stranded in Machu Picchu district —of whom more than 300 are foreigners. — NNN-AGENCIES
